Thinking of creating your own line of custom ceramic plate? Whether you’re starting a homeware brand, launching a kitchen range, or just love the idea of designing something original—welcome!

But let’s be honest, when you’re new to this, it’s easy to feel a bit lost. Glazes, moulds, packaging, food safety testing… It can all sound like a lot.

Don’t worry—we’ve worked with plenty of first-time buyers (some just like you), and we’ve picked up a few things along the way. Here’s a beginner-friendly guide to help you get started—without the jargon, and with just enough detail to keep things clear.

Why Ceramic Plates Are a Great Place to Start

Ceramic just makes sense. It’s durable, looks great, and feels way more premium than plastic or glass. Plus, people are spending more on thoughtful, well-made tableware than ever before—especially in the UK and Australia where lifestyle brands and conscious consumers are really embracing the slow living trend.

Custom ceramic plates also give you tons of creative freedom. You can tweak the shape, glaze, texture—even emboss your logo. So it’s not just another plate—it’s your plate.

Things to Think About Before You Dive In

???? Shape & Size

One of the first questions we’ll ask you is: what shape and size are you thinking? Whether it’s a flat dinner plate, something with a gentle curve, or a modern coupe-style design, this affects everything—from moulds to packaging.

???? Tip: If your want to do a unique plate, be prepared for a one-time mould fee. It’s totally normal, especially for custom work.

???? Colour, Glaze & Speckles

Yep, you can absolutely customise the colour. Most factories (us included!) match Pantone codes to get your exact shade. Want something minimalist like greige or dusty rose? Or maybe something bold for a statement table setting? Totally up to you.

You can also choose a finish—matte, glossy, speckled, textured… This is where your brand’s personality really shines through.

???? Branding Details (Like Logo Placement)

Small logos can make a big impact—especially when they’re embossed into the plate rim or subtly added underneath. If you want something clean and understated, we recommend keeping the logo small and using a simple, vector-based file like .ai or .pdf. Your supplier will thank you!

???? Is It Food Safe? (It Should Be)

If your plates are going to be used for actual meals (not just display), you’ll want to make sure they meet food safety standards.

Common ones include:

  • LFGB (popular in Germany)

  • CA Prop 65 (for the US market)

  • EC (popular in Europe)

Ask your supplier if they can provide a Certificate of Compliance or help you arrange third-party testing (like with Intertek). This stuff matters—especially if you’re selling internationally.

Let’s Talk About Packaging (It’s Not Just a Box)

How your plate arrives matters just as much as what’s inside. If you’re planning to offer your plates as a gift set or sell them online, you’ll need packaging that:

  • Fits the plates snugly

  • Protects them during shipping

  • Looks good and matches your branding

You can customise colours, finishes, and even add your logo. Inserts or dividers are also a good idea—ceramics aren’t exactly lightweight.

⚠️ One thing to remember: ceramic plates can be heavy. Packing four into one box might look pretty, but it needs to be practical too. Trust your supplier if they suggest tweaks!

Sampling: The Step You Shouldn’t Skip

Before committing to a big order, get a sample made. This is your chance to check:

  • The exact shape and size

  • Whether the colour is what you pictured

  • Logo placement and quality

  • How it fits in the packaging

Yes, custom samples cost a bit more (because they’re handmade and not mass-produced), but it’s absolutely worth it. It helps you avoid surprises later—and gives you something to show off on social media or to potential stockists.

A Few Extra Tips from the Workshop Floor

✔ Be specific: The more detail you give upfront (photos, sketches, Pantone codes), the better.
✔ Ask lots of questions. Good suppliers won’t mind—they want your product to succeed too.
✔ Don’t rush packaging. It’s the first impression your customer will get.
