What is Bone China?

Later, between 1789 and 1793, Josiah Spode of Stoke-on-Trent refined the formula and introduced “Stoke China.” After Spode’s passing, his son renamed it “Bone China,” setting the standard for the porcelain that would become highly popular across Europe.
Companies like Royal Doulton, with a history of nearly 200 years, became leaders in Bone China production, earning the “Royal” title due to their connection with British royalty.
In the 1960s, Japanese manufacturers entered the Bone China market, ending a 200-year European monopoly. By the late 1970s, Tangshan in China also started producing bone porcelain. Today, China is the world’s largest producer of Bone China, much of which is exported globally.
