Dehua porcelain production has a long history, beginning in the Neolithic Age, flourishing in the Tang and Song Dynasties, and flourishing in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In recent years, Dehua has focused on exploring and sorting out the cultural connotations of ceramics, giving historical stories connotations of the times and keeping the flames of the millennium-old porcelain capital alive.


Dehua Kiln is a famous ancient kiln site in my country. Currently, there are as many as 239 ancient kiln sites discovered in Dehua, spread across 18 towns and villages in the county. In July 2021, the Dehua Kiln Site (Weilin-Neiban and Qudou Palace) was successfully included in the World Heritage List as one of the heritage sites of “Quanzhou: China’s World Marine Trade Center in the Song and Yuan Dynasties”. It became the first porcelain kiln world heritage in the world. In December 2022, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage announced the fourth batch of national archaeological site park listings and project approvals, and the Dehuayao National Archaeological Site Park was officially approved.


At present, Dehua has completed the preparation of the “Dehua Kiln Archaeological Site Park Master Plan (2022-2035)”, striving to build the Dehua Kiln Archaeological Site Park into a large-scale archaeological exhibition, sightseeing and experience, study tours, leisure shopping, etc. A comprehensive cultural and tourism integration project allows tourists to experience the charm of Dehua ceramic culture up close.

Since the Song Dynasty, with the prosperity of Quanzhou Port’s commerce and the development of overseas trade, Dehua white porcelain has been sold in large quantities to Southeast Asia and the Middle East, becoming the main commodity on the Maritime Silk Road. “BLANC DE CHINE” is the French’s praise for the Dehua white porcelain of the Ming Dynasty.


In recent years, Dehua Ceramics has taken the initiative to appear on the international stage, demonstrating its cultural confidence. From the ceramic version of the Beijing Winter Olympics mascot “Bingdundun” to the official licensed products of the Qatar World Cup, the Big Coffee Cup and the Small Waist Beer Mug, many popular items have made the world feel the charm of “World Porcelain Capital Dehua”. At the beginning of this year, 35 ceramic companies in Dehua County went to Malaysia and Singapore to expand their markets and held “China White·Dehua Porcelain” special exhibitions and investment promotion activities, and achieved remarkable results.


After RCEP came into effect, Dehua Ceramics’ exports to Southeast Asian countries grew rapidly. In the future, Dehua will take advantage of the “One Belt and One Road” initiative to seize the development opportunities of RCEP, implement the internationalization strategy of Dehua ceramics industry, organize the “China White Silk Road Tour” event, and actively cooperate with “One Belt and One Road” countries and regions, and RCEP members. The country has built a trade platform, explored the establishment of the “Ceramic Capital International Alliance”, continuously expanded the international market space for sustainable growth, and guided the adjustment of industrial structure and the transformation and upgrading of foreign trade.

Zeng Xiansheng, director of the Ceramics Office of Dehua County, said that although the current value of the Dehua Ceramics brand exceeds 100 billion yuan, there is still a lot of room for growth in both its cultural influence and brand communication.


In order to accelerate the development of the ceramic industry, Dehua County recently held a high-quality development conference for the “China White·Dehua Porcelain” industry and released a five-year action plan for the high-quality development of the “China White·Dehua Porcelain” industry from 2023 to 2027. In the next five years, Dehua County will focus on cultivating and strengthening the “Chinese White·Dehua Porcelain” industry, expanding international influence, enhancing process innovation, improving market competitiveness, in-depth implementation of the “ceramics +” industry integrated development, and vigorously developing new products , new equipment, new materials, new technologies, and new processes, promote product fashion, high-end brands, manufacturing digitization, green production, process standardization, and resource intensification, and promote the ceramic industry cluster to exceed 100 billion yuan by 2027.
